Driving Glasses

Years ago when I was younger I didn’t need prescription glasses, I got myself a pair of Ray-Ban sun glasses almost as soon as I got my driving license. I used them as driving glasses. Not only are they cool, they make driving a real pleasure. I had them until some one broke into my car and stole them.

I replaced them with another pair soon after these did not see too much action. With too much computer use, my eye sight went. In came the prescription glasses, out went my cool Ray-Bans, followed closely by totally un-cool clip on sunglasses just like in the picture. I kid you not.

Being too poor to have prescription sunglasses then, these clip ons did the job of keeping the glare out but were the anti thesis of cool. Imagine when you have to flip them out. Ultra not cool. Later on, off course I got the magnetic clip on which are bit better but still I couldn’t beat having a Ray Ban.

I had to wait almost 15 years until I can be cool again. A couple of weeks ago, I thought it is time to get a new pair of glasses and I decided to get photochromic lenses. Photochromic lenses are lenses that turn dark in bright sun light and turns back to almost clear indoors. They used to cost a lot but prices has dropped quite a lot in recent years. Although a bit more costly compared to normal clear prescription glasses, this was my opportunity to be cool again!

Now that I’m less poor, I decided to go cool even if though that meant a lighter wallet. A man gotta do what a man gotta do! So the other day, I had my eye examined (power had increased, astigmatism went down), spent the next 20 minutes or so to choose my frames. After all the flicking of test lenses is done, I plunked down the deposit and waited 3 days for my cool new Transitions. By the way, Transitions is a trademark of one such photochromic lenses. The 3 days was a long 3 days wait.

First impressions, after the giddiness cleared (due to change in power), I found the new glasses pretty cool. A walk outside even when the sky was overcast produced a grey tint. No more fumbling around for clips ons. Although I’ve been warned that in a car which has UV cut windscreen and tinted, they won’t turn that dark, they are good enough for me. The transitions aren’t designed for night driving, the do reduce glare considerable for me.

This brings me to the topic of driving glasses. Sometime back, I went hunting for amber driving glasses thinking that they will help reduce glare. The feedback from those that used them is mixed. Before buying them, do think carefully. There are reports that say amber tinted driving glasses reduces light level and lowers visibility .

While looking for ways to care for my cool glasses, I was a disappointed (only a little) to find out there is something even better out there. Huh? Now, my transitions are cool but these are ultra cool. One word. Drivewear!

Here is a testimonial of someone who got them.

As far as the Drivewear goes, they’re just unbelievable. I wear them all the time while driving and while outdoors except when its
completely dark outside. They’re perfect for driving and for golf.

When driving, there’s next to no glare and traffic lights seem to just pop out at you. They do get fairly dark; much darker than regular transitions.

The advantage of Drivewear over Transitions is they darken even while you are in the car. See how they work here. Sorry that the lower page do seem like it just came out of nuclear lab or something. You can find transition driving glasses here and Drivewear glasses here.

By the way, these driving glasses are not recommended when driving in the dark.

Mike….Given the relatively low cost and the superior vision of contact lenses, why didn’t you simply get contacts then you could still wear your cool Ray-Ban’s? Just a thought because that’s what I did and when I compared the price of contacts to frames they were (and still are comparable. Prior to that (because I’m a cool frame freak also) I had prescription lenses inserted into my Ray Ban frames. You can do that with a lot of brand name frames in fact to satisfy my vanity I currently have a pair of Oakley Juliet frames with prescription lenses that I use as a back-up. The lenses have a graduated tint so that If I have to wear them they look more like cool shades and not so goofy “Spectacles”!!

Thanks Steve for the suggestion. Just that I’ve never tried contacts before and never crossed my mind. Will keep in mind the next time I need new glassses
