With the stock market going south, more and more car makers are coming out with small cheap cars to run about in town. The latest to join a long line of contenders is the Nissan Pixo. Based on the Suzuki Alto, it will be produced in India. Unveiled at the Paris Motor Show, the Pixo is targeted to be a released sometime in spring 2009.

The Nissan Pixo measure in at just 11ft 8in long, 4ft 10in tall and 5ft 3in wide, although at some angles it look bigger than it really is. Powered by a 1L 3 cylinder engine 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic as optional, the little engine is good for about 65 hp.

Although marketed as a cheap car in the UK, (it will be cheaper than £6,526 Perodua Kelisa from Malaysia, the current lowest price automatic). The entry level Visia version is equipped with power steering, anti-lock brakes and dual front airbags. The Acenta models will have keyless entry, power front windows, split-folding rear seats, side airbags and front fog lamps.

Mike’s 2 cents – current sales of low priced car shows that car makers can make and sell reasonably equipped cars much cheaper than what we think. When the crunch came, car makers have to survive even when it mean making less profit. Read Nissan and Renault pleas for support here. In the mean time, start getting used to small cars like the Pixo or the Toyota iQ and Toyota Aygo
