Mazda came out with an innovative idle stop system for its diesel engine. Idles stop-start system is nothing new. Several cars already have such system. However the Smart Idle Stop System, SISS is quite smart. Instead of re-starting the engine with the starter motor, fuel is injected into the cylinder and ignited to generate downward piston force to start the engine after a shutdown. Mazda says the system improves fuel economy by “around ten percent” in urban areas, based on results in Japan’s 10-15 mode tests.

Engine restarts happen in 0.35 second, Mazda says, thanks to the precise control the SISS system provides. The SISS will be in production cars in 2009.
