Nissan EV 02

Seems AutoPitStop is going a bit green. We just wrote about the diesel X-Trail 20GT in the last post. Nissan announced that it will be the first manufacturer to mass produce electric cars. That’s a breath of fresh air. What Nissan did to create the EV 02 is to hack in three 220lb cases of batteries beneath the seats of the Nissan Cube . Each case contains 24 laminated lithium-ion modules about the size of a small laptop. The batteries are laminated to disperse heat. The batteries are situated between the wheels for crash protection.

In case you think electric cars are only for the greenies grandma, the EV is targeted to match a 3.5 liter V6 Nissan 350Z in 0-40mph acceleration! Charge time is 80% capacity in an hour.

With nearly half a ton of battery it might seem a lot to add to the original weight of 2,200 plus lbs, but it will get smaller on the production model. A big advantages Nissan has is the Nissan-NEC partnership has found ways to produce flat, or laminate, batteries, rather than conventional, cylindrical cells. This mean space and weight reduction.

Although the EV 02 is still a prototype, Nissan is aiming for 100 mile range and hitting 150 miles would make the engineers very happy, not to mention potential lines of customers queing up for it. For the moment, Nissan plans to have tests in Israel and Denmark, then expanding into Portugal and, in 2010, the United States. Only in 2012, will we be seeing the EV 02 Cube available to the public.
