Devices That Improves Fuel Economy

We recently have a heart stopping increase in fuel prices. This will have an impact as inflation will rear its head. If you started looking to :-

  • get a smaller fuel efficient car,
  • thought about converting you car to run on NGV,
  • thinking if you can use a motor bike,
  • joked that the bicycle is an option,
  • considered moving closer to the office,
  • installing fuel saving gadgets

then you are not alone. I’m sure all of us have ran the options through our mind. I can’t tell you which is the best option for you given that some have families to ferry around, so a Kancil won’t do, some need to have a bit of prestige to meet customers and it won’t do to show up in a beat up car, if however you are thinking of doing installing fuel saving gadgets, then think carefully.

Well, there are many claims in the market that their product save fuel, all sorts of magnet, nano technology and fuel improver. While some of these products do work, most don’t. You’ll end up wasting money and in some cases damaging your car in the long run.

I’ve check around the web for quite a long time since I’m also keen to save fuel because I have the feeling I’m burning cash every time I start the car! If you really want to save fuel, here is I gadget I suppose you can check out.

It doesn’t not improve your fuel economy directly but it teaches you how you can modify your driving habits to save fuel. Yes, that’s right. Instead of actually doing something to the fuel or to your car, it helps you to develop driving techniques that will save you fuel and money. Many people swear by it.

The device is called the ScanGauge II. Okay, if you have an expensive car with a built in trip computer than you’ll probably not want this. You see, most of us measures our fuel economy by the tankful. That is not sufficient because you would not know where you are missing out. It could be you press the accelerator just a little too much when you could ease off or use the wrong gear when climbing a hill. A trip computer will show you exactly how much fuel you are using moment by moment. Older BMW’s and Mercedes have this for years but they run off the car vacuum. They are useful but not that accurate. Newer computers actually measures the fuel that goes out of the fuel injectors.

If you car does not not have a trip computer, your next best option is the ScanGauge II. When you plug in the ScanGauge II into your car, it will show you all sorts of information you’ve never seen before, like your car’s maximum speed, average speed, driving time, driving distance, trip fuel economy and others data.

Besides that, is also lets you read standard engine trouble codes as well as clear the “check engine” light and other warning lamps. With this, you can decided how urgent a problem it without worrying to rush and see your mechanic. The most important thing however is it calculates fuel consumption immediately. By looking at how much fuel you are using at every moment, you can modify your driving behavior thus saving fuel.

The ScanGauge hooks up to your car through the OBD port. Most newer car with fuel injection will have an OBD II port which is newer. If you have seen your mechanic hook up a handheld computer to display all sorts of data, that’s the ODB port. It is located within 3 feet of the steering wheel, usually just under the dashboard. You can find the OBD location using this database .
