Nissan is considering introducing new hybrid car models this year according to local distributor Edaran Tan Chong Motor. At the moment, Nissan’s hybrid cars uses technology licensed from Toyota known as Hybrid Synergy Drive System. This drive system is in use in the Prius, Highlander Hybrid, Camry Hybrid, Lexus RX 400h and Lexus GS 450h .
Based on existing tax structure here, a slight increase in price results in a huge difference when the cars finally reach the consumers. It makes little economic sense to buy a hybrid car unless the government gives incentives for people to buy such cars. The only hybrid car in Malaysia is the Honda Civic hybrid. It came in limited units for test and apparently the police force have 1 or 2 units. A hybrid car will benefit those caught in city traffic and less so for those in less congested locations.
There have been calls in the past for the Government to subsidized cars to convert to NGV instead of subsidizing petrol and diesel. It makes sense to do so, however this remains to be seen.
